This was what we did for week 7 of our Spring session of MusIQ Club.

Faith helped explain to Allison what double notes are since she would be working on those today. We all practiced coordinating our two hands to move up and down at the same time.  For Vanya we talked about Grown up notes, and practiced drawing the stems on them, stems up for right hand and stems down for left hand. For Faith and Nadia we practiced drawing middle C on the grand staff we also learned where to draw D and E on the grand staff in the treble clef and C B and A in the bass clef. We made some rhythms in 4/4 time using quarter notes and half notes and practiced clapping them.

Allison did lesson & practice 12 “Left Hand Ant Tunnel” with Mr. Joplin. In this lesson she learned to form the proper hand position and keep each finger on its own key starting with the thumb on C and one finger on each neighbour note. Then she practiced playing each finger in turn.  Then finished with a review of Rhythms. She went on to do lesson & practice 13 “Two Hands together” with Mr. Joplin. She review hand position again and in this lesson practiced playing each of her 10 fingers while keeping her hands in the proper position with curled fingers.

Vanya did lesson & Practice 21 “Ode to Joy” with new teacher Mr. Villa-Lobos today. He reviewed the songs he learned last week by keeping his hands in position and pressing the correct finger, using all 5 fingers of each hand. He worked on a new songs called “Copy Cat”. he then went on to work on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy for the right hand. This is a challenge because it uses all 5 fingers of the right hand and the note skip instead of just moving by step wise motion.  He finished with a review of the musical alphabet.  The goal here is to keep proper hand position with curled fingers and not to play each note with finger 2 (the pointer) but rather to use all the fingers as indicated. please supervise at home!

Nadia and Faith  did lesson and practice 37 ” More Grand Staff Songs for Both hands” with teacher Mrs. Beach. In this lesson they reviewed all the notes learned so far on the grand staff and played some songs with them, then they worked with Mr. Woodpecker who acted as a metronome tapping out the beat while they practiced playing the rhythm keeping in time with his tapping of the tempo.  which is probably our biggest challenge right now.

After the lessons we went over Ode to Joy, our ensemble piece. and played a game finding notes on our keyboards.

For those who are interested in practicing Ode to Joy at home or on a regular piano place your right hand thumb on middle C then play these finger numbers without moving the hand from its position:

This was what we did for week 7 of our Spring session of MusIQ Club.

We began by eating our lunches and using that time to review finger numbers and the importance of hand position for Cade, Jack, Kaleb and Will and notes that move from high or low toward middle C  for Liana, Hayley, Yicong, Zaid. We tried a fun game using the musical alphabet. Then we went to the keyboards to do our lesson, followed by our  practice room. We took a break to finish our lunches.  We finished with Concertmaster to  work on our ensemble piece  Ode to Joy.

Liana, Hayley, & Yicong all did lesson and practice 10″Higher and higher/Lower and lower” with teacher Mr. Bach in which they learned to play three notes in a series moving either from high getting lower toward middle C or From low getting higher toward middle C. They finished with a review of rhythms.

Cade, Jack, Kaleb, Will did lesson 21 “Ode to Joy” with new teacher Mr. Villa-Lobos. They continued to work on the simple songs using stepwise or skipping motion learned last week. They worked on a new songs called Copy Cat. The they started work on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from the 9th Symphony. This song is a real challenger because it is so long and used all 5 fingers fo the right hand. It also has skips and not just stepwise motion! They finished with a review of the musical alphabet going both forward and backwards this week.. They went on to do practice 21 with Miss Melody. The most important thing when working at home is to supervise to make sure they are keeping proper hand position with curled fingers and playing each finger of each hand! and not just using finger 2 (pointer) for every note!

Evan did lesson and practice 42 “Forte and Piano” with Mrs. Beach and practice 42 too. He played a songs using all the notes he knows from the grand staff so far: CDEF on the treble staff and CBA on the bass staff. But this week he had to add dynamics! He played some parts forte (loud) and others piano (soft).

Homework: Please print out the worksheets and have your child bring the completed worksheet to the next class. I suggest putting it in their lunch boxes so they don’t forget them.

You are working on Let it Be. When you practice at home start by warming up with your C major scale 10 times each hand and then play You are My Sunshine a few times. Work on Let it Be this week, make sure you don’t forget about the hand movement that happens in bar 10 and make sure you hold the half notes and longer notes for their full value.

Adam:
You are working on Clementine.  When you practice at home start by warming up with your C major scale 10 times each hand and then play Pop Goes the Weasel a few times. Make sure you have your hands in the right position before you begin playing Clementine, keep plugging away at it slowly, you will keep getting better every time.

Ty:
You started working today on Sing Tu Yoo.  When you practice at home start by warming up with your C major scale 10 times each hand and then play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star a few times. Make sure you use all the correct fingering for this song, don’t just play it with your two fingers!

Mariel:
You are starting to learn Happy Birthday. This will be a challenging piece at first because of the last 3 bars of the song where each of your hands is playing different notes at the same time.  When you practice at home start by warming up with your C major scale 10 times each hand and then play Away in a Manger a few times. When you practice Happy Birthday just take your time and work through it, most of the song shouldn’t be over challenging for you just focus on the last 3 bars. If you master this song while you are at home this week feel free to browse the other level 2 pieces for something harder to work on, I recommend Here we Go In a Row, Lightly Row, When the Saints Go Marching In or Jingle Bells for now but feel free to try out other songs as well if you like.

We began by singing the musical alphabet both forward and backward.  We reviewed finger numbers and hand position, and finished with rhythms clap backs.

Then off we went to the keyboards to do our lessons. Keiran & Brett did Practice 8 – “Double Notes”. Sammy did lesson 9 – “Higher and Higher, Lower and Lower”.  London did Lesson 11 - “right hand ant tunnel” with Mr. Joplin. Hudson and Cam did Lesson 12 – “Left hand Ant Tunnel” and Caleb did practice 12 ”left hand ant tunnel” Homework: Please review the lesson at home with your child and spend a few minutes playing the games together! Group 2: Macy, Earle,  Stella, Ally, Shaelynn, Sam, & Rinta

We began by singing the musical alphabet both forward and backward.  We did finger numbers, practice our hand position and playing each finger in turn. and finished with clap backs.

Today at the computers Stella, and Shaelynn did lesson 16 – “More Musical Steps” they worked on playing four notes in a row moving up or down. Ally did practice 15 – “Musical Steps” she worked on playing three notes in a row moving up or down.  Macy, Sam, Earle and Rinta did lesson 12 – “Left hand ant tunnel”.They worked on forming the proper hand position with curled fingers and one finger on each notes.  Home work: parents complete the following together with your child: Stella, Shaelynn & Ally: lesson 16, Sam, Macy, Rinta & Earle: lesson 12. The rest of the week play the games together, just 10 minutes twice a week is all it takes.

Remember parents, this year the software is included in your registration fee. You will get an email with a code, a link, and instructions to download and install the software, your children will be in Children’s Music Journey Volume 1. You can purchase a midi keyboard through the office, or use one you already have if it is midi compatible and the fun can continue at home all week! I suggest just 10 minutes a twice a week if possible to keep reinforcing the concepts they learn in class.

Today in class you completed Lesson 13 and 14 with Mr. Joplin. You practiced playing songs stepping away from and towards middle C. You practiced playing using all of your fingers like you learned last week. You learned your musical alphabet this week as well. We used some of the right hand finger number songs in the library to practice getting used to using all of our fingers, great job!

Today in class you completed Lesson 16 with Miss Mendelssohn. You practiced playing stepping songs and finger number songs. You learned how to play Hot Crust Buns as well as Upside Down Buns. Awesome work! You practiced playing right hand finger number songs from the library as well.

This is what we did in class today for our seventh week of the MusIQ Club Spring Session! Please see below for homework and worksheet assignments.

We started with a review of hand position, finger numbers, we even practiced playing some different combinations of finger numbers. Then we saw what everyone remembered about the life of Mr. Scott Joplin.

Hayley did lesson and practice 45 ”Recital” with teacher Mr. Tchaikovsky. In this lesson she reviewed the grand staff songs she has been working on and practiced her recital pieces to get them ready to perform.

Alyssa, Fady, Kayleigh, Nina, Paige, Sarah & Salma  all did lesson 37 - ”Grand Staff Songs for Both Hands” with teacher Mrs. Beach, and then practice 37 with Miss Melody. In this lessons they learned some new songs using the notes they have seen so far in the grand staff but this time playing songs that incorporate both hands. And then they learned how to use Mr. Woodpecker to keep a steady tempo while they tapped out the rhythms of quarter, half and whole notes.

Sasha - did lesson & practice 11″Right hand Ant Tunnel” with new teacher Mr. Joplin. In this lesson he learned to form the proper hand position with fingers curled and touching the keys on the finger tips except for the thumb which plays on the side . He did a great job and went on to do lesson & practice 12 – “Left hand Ant Tunnel” with Mr. Joplin. In this lesson he did the same but with the left hand

We finished with a games and then worked on our ensemble piece “Ode to Joy” in Concertmaster.

Today was our seventh class of the Spring MusIQ Club session.  Please see below for homework and worksheet assignments.

We ate our lunches and did a review of the musical alphabet backwards, hand position, note values, and finished with a great big rhythm challenge.

Kyra & Ella  Lesson & practice 50 “Playing with a Steady Beat” with teacher composer Mr. Satie. They played songs using both hands and all the notes of the grand staff learned so far. These are CDEF in the right hand and CBAG in the left hand. They are using a variety of note values like quarter, half, dotted half, and whole note. This week however they tried to play these songs along with Mr. Woodpecker who acted as their metronome by tapping out the beat. It was a very challenging lesson so be sure to review at home!

Daphne did Lesson & practice 42 – “Piano and Forte” with teacher Mr. Tchaikovsky this week.  In this lesson she played songs using the note learned so far on the grand staff but this time using different dynamics as marked in the music. Forte told her to play loud and piano meant soft!

Lachlan did Lesson and practice 37 “Grand Staff Songs for Both Hands” with teacher Mrs. Beach.  He reviewed notes learned so far C d and E in the Treble Clef and in the bass clef: C B & A. Then he played some new simple songs using those notes. He went on to work with Mr. Woodpecker who helped kept a steady tempo while he tapped out the rhythms.

Joseph (absent)& Liam  did lesson and practice 35 - “The Bass Clef: C B A” with Mr. Mozart in this lesson they learn how to read the notes  C B and A on the grand staff. Then finished by playing some simple songs using these notes.

Emily & Sandra did Lesson 21 – “Ode to Joy” with teacher Miss Mendelssohn. In this lesson they reviewed songs learned so far like Mary had a big fat sheep, Mountain and Valley. Then they went on to work on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy using all 5 fingers in the right hand.

Thomas & Dahlia did lesson & practice 11″Right hand Ant Tunnel” with new teacher Mr. Joplin. In this lesson they learned to form the proper hand position with fingers curled and touching the keys on the finger tips except for the thumb which plays on the side . They did a great job and went on to do lesson & practice 12 – “Left hand Ant Tunnel” with Mr. Joplin. In this lesson they did the same but with the left hand.

We finished off with a games.

Today in class you completed Lesson 67! Awesome job! You are continuing to learn about sharps this week. Today we started class with Musical Concentration to practice matching musical symbols with names. You did great! We warmed up with Fare Thee Well to Nova Scotia and then worked on Waltzing Matilda. You played the whole song today and did AMAZINGLY! You are still a little uncertain when the hand movements take place but you are learning quickly. Great work!

-Practice the first 9 bars of Walzting Matilda with both hands.

Today in class you completed Lesson 6 and 7 with Mr. Bach. You learned about holding notes! Holding notes are notes which are held for 2-4 beats. You practiced songs using holding notes, high notes and low notes and middle C.  We did some 4 count rhythm tapping as well.

For Homework:
-Complete Practice 7 with Miss Melody. Take care to count out loud while rhythm tapping at the end, it will help you to play the rhythm correctly
-Play the Princess storybook and Bongo Boy games to practice your rhythms

Today in class you completed Lessons 13 and 15 with Mr. Joplin. You practiced playing songs stepping up and down using all of your fingers. You learned how to play your first finger number song today, Hot Crust Buns. Awesome Job!

Today in class we started by naming notes on the treble clef. You have both gotten a lot faster at this! Awesome! We played musical concentration to help us match up musical symbols with their names. We will practice this for the next couple of weeks so that you learn all the terms. We practiced playing our C major scale. Remember the fingering 123 (thumb tuck) 12345. Next we practiced learning songs, we practiced Row Row Row your Boat and On Top of Old Smokey.

For Homework:
-Practice your C major scale
-Work on the pieces you played in class. Listen to the song while the computer plays it back and try to mimic the smoothness when you play.

Today in Class

Today we talked about our new teacher Mr. Mozart, and “The Grand Staff” before completing Lesson 31 with, Mr. Mozart, who talked about Grown-up holding notes and did some review.  Afterwards, we worked on our songs and you spent some time in the games room.  Great work everyone!

Today, after reviewing our notes in the treble and bass clefs on the floor and introducing treble clef “G” , James  completed Lessons 48 and 49 while Sebastian completed lesson 48 and then I helped him with his songs.

Today, Taylor learned how to play with both hands together in lesson 73 with Ms. Chaminade.  You songs are coming along nicely!  Remember to keep your fingers slighly bent and touching the keys so you don’t lose your spot!  Great job!
