Mondays @ Sunnybrae – Week 3

I would just like to remind everyone that I will see you in 2 weeks as next Monday is a P.D. Day. Everyone did an excellent job today! I was impressed with how many students brought in completed worksheets.  Well done!

Beginner Level 1A

What a great class, we had lots of fun!  We enjoyed repeating short rhythmic patterns at the start of class. Then we learned to replace the birds and whales in our notation with circle notes, and just a line for Middle C notes – no more sky and ocean.  I have noticed a big improvement this week with how well you can repeat a rhythm of short and long sounds!  You all did a great job on your lessons and in the games room.   Today, in Lesson 4, Mr. Beethoven taught us that some music is written to paint pictures for our ears and imaginations, and he played us his Moonlight Sonata, which sounds like moonlight dancing on the lake.  We also did Lesson 5 where we reviewed everything that we have learned so far with Mr. Beethoven.  

This Week @ Home

  • In CMJ volume 1 (if you have it) review Lesson 5 and have fun in the practice room. In the Games Room there are 3 games for you to play.
  • Make up your own rhythmic patterns and clap or tap them. Try funny ones (My nose is a rose!), personal ones (My sister’s name is _____), yummy ones (I love to eat ________) and silly ones (Snakes are jig-gly, wig-gggly).
  • Start practicing “Love Somebody”.  Place your right hand thumb on middle “C” and follow the finger numbers!  If you don’t have a keyboard, you can practice the finger numbers on a book. 
  • Have fun with the worksheets which incude a word search for words about Mr. Beethoven and a page on “Circle Notes”! It was great to see finished worksheets this week!  Great job, guys!   

Level 1B

Today we did Lesson 15 with Mr. Joplin in CMJ Volume 1, playing longer, harder songs using both right hand and left hand reading by finger numbers and remembering nice hand positions. When playing musical steps, remember to place your thumbs on Middle “C” and that each finger gets a white key! Afterwards, we did Lesson 16 with our new teacher, Miss. Mendelsohnn.  The kids had fun in the games room and improvising room again today as well.  Good work!

This Week @ Home

  • Continue practicing your finger numbers. Review Hot Cross Buns if you have it from last session.
  • Practice “Love Somebody”, our new finger number tune.  Put your right thumb on Middle C and follow the finger numbers.
  • Practice finding all the Cs on your piano (Group of 2 black keys, down to C) and all the Fs (Group of 3 Black keys, down to F).
  • Complete the homework sheet I gave you about naming the white keys.
  • Have some fun at your piano making up your own music!
  • If you have CMJ at home, you can review Lesson 16 with Miss. Mendelsohnn and Miss Melody and then head to Games room. 

Level 2A

Today, we did Lesson 28, where we were using all ten fingers to play notes moving in steps. This is getting us ready for an easy transition to the Grand Staff in a couple of weeks. We have to remember that our thumbs go on middle “C” and to keep our fingers in place on the keys. Wendy learned all about whole, half and dotted half notes with her new teacher, Mr. Mozart, in Lesson 32, after completing Lesson 30.  We also did some rhythm review on the floor.  After, we went to the Games room and played “Stepping Stones”.  Then some of you had fun in the Improvisation room!  Don’t forget to practice at home!  Good work on your Lessons everyone!

This Week @ Home

  • Review your finger numbers (thumbs are #1).
  • Practice “Love Somebody” to review your Musical Alphabet.  Place your right thumb on Middle C to get started.
  • Try clapping these rhythms with an adult at home. Remember to clap on the “&”s:  1 2 3&4 , 1&2 3&4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4&, 1&2&3&4, 1&2&3 4, etc. You can make up your own, too!
  • If you have CMJ2 at home, review Lesson 28 with Miss Melody each day and then head to the Games Room. Wendy can review Lesson 32 in the practice room with Miss. Melody.
  • Complete the “White Note Naming” page to bring to me next class.
