Blanchard Memorial, CMJ Monday AM, March 15, 2010

Some of us were a little soggy and sleepy this week, at least there will be no time change next week and let’s hope we have less rain!

We talked briefly about whole, half and quarter notes and how many beats each of those notes gets (4, 2 and 1 respectively), we talked about Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and next week’s recital, and then everyone got started on their lessons.  Alexa, Adriana and Chris were all very diligent,  Alexa and Adriana completing lesson 23 (whole notes, 4 beats!) and Chris working in Beginner Level 2 before practicing the piece he has learned by ear and will be performing for us all on Monday.

Alexa, Sydney, Adriana, Alex and Chris, your homework assignment is to go through lesson 24 in CMJ1, even if you have already started CMJ2.  This lesson is specifically review for the recital, and since we will be entertaining at the beginning of class rather than the end you can check out lesson 25 as well if you have time.  Alex and Chris, if you want to play a piece from CMJ2 that’s OK as well.   (Sydney, if you do not have access to the software you can have some time for this before the class starts, or after the parents leave, and you can play a piece for us at the end of class.)  It would be fantastic if you all could play one of the folk songs for two hands that you can find in the library by clicking on the computer.  If you don’t or can’t work on this at home though, we’ll work on it in class.

Adriana and Alexa, practice at least TWO games so that you can demonstrate ONE of them (each) to the parents.  Neither of the two you prepare should be Leaf Catcher though, as Andrew and Adam will demonstrate that one.

Andrew and Adam, practice Leaf Catcher so you can demonstrate next week!  I will also be asking you to demonstrate some things like saying the alphabet backwards (with the hopscotch game board), finding middle C on the keyboards, and showing us how piano players number their fingers and how to find C position.  If you want to refresh your memories you can check out lessons 11, 12 and 13 with Mr. Joplin.

Chris, practice Darth Vader’s music with all five fingers of your right hand!  You should only have to move your hand once to go up for the two high notes, and then your hand should go back into C position again (yes, C position, even though one of your fingers will be on a black note!).

Everyone, we will practice Ode to Joy together next Monday, but it would be great if you can practice it on your own as well.  Try to play it from memory!

Happy practicing everyone, I look forward to seeing you all next Monday!

Amelia
