Kingswood Elementary, Grades P to 2, Wednesdays from 11:55-12:55 (March 10)

Lesson 11:

Today we met with our new teacher. His name was Mr. Scott Joplin, and he was alive about 100 years ago. Isn’t it great that even though his parents had no money, his mother was able to get jobs cleaning houses for the rich so her son could play on their pianos to practice? Someone even agreed to give him lessons for free!

Mr. Joplin taught us how to make a 5-finger ant tunnel with our right hand. He also taught us that each of our fingers has a number, with our thumb being finger #1 and each other finger is a number counting up from 1. Make sure you always have your thumb on Middle C and that each finger is playing a neighbour note!

After this lesson, we spent some time practising with Miss Melody, and then we went to the Games Room where we had a few new games! See you in 2 weeks!

Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:

1- Print out and complete this worksheet!

1- Practice forming your 5-finger ant tunnel, and playing with all of your fingers ever day!

2- Print out some songs from this page so that you can practice playing with your 5-finger ant tunnels and remember your finger numbers!

Lesson 22:

Today, we learnt about a few more grownup notes. These new notes are called the half note, and the quarter note. The half note is worth 2 beats, and the quarter note is worth 1 beat. Mr. Villa Lobos did a great job at explaining these too us, and Miss Melody helped us practice them to make sure we remember them!

After all this hard work, we went to the Games Room, and noticed that the Train Game is now using grown up notes, including the half note and quarter note that we just learnt about! Amazing job everyone!

To finish off the class, you all went to the improvisation room and practised playing your quarter notes and your half notes using different sounds and background music! Great work everyone!

Home Assignments & Reminders:

1- Print out and work on this activity sheet!

2- Try writing out different quarter notes, and half notes at home. Then play them on the piano or clap the rhythm to yourself! Don’t forget to bring an example of your work in next week!

3- Remember to keep improvising every day and always have fun!

Lesson 46:

We started off the class with a fantastic rhythm circle, where you each had to clap back a rhythm by hearing it, and by seeing it! Some of them were a little tricky, but you all did a fantastic job! After this, we went to the computers to start our lesson.

We decided to jump over lesson 45, and go straight away to meet our new teacher, who is named Mr. Satie. Mr. Satie was born in 1866 and was a French composer who lived most of his life in Paris.

Mr. Satie spent today’s lesson teaching us how to find a new note on the bass clef. This new note, is below the A that we already know, and is called G. We play this new note with our fourth (4th) finger. Great work finding it everyone!

After some practising with Miss Melody, we went to the Games Room to play the different games, some of which now make use of our new bass note! To finish off the class, we went to the Improvisation Room to try and come up with some melodies that use our new note, Bass Clef G. Fantastic work everyone, see you all in two weeks!

Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:

1- Print out this fun little worksheet, to color in and play!

2- Print out a copy of Row, Row, Row, which uses our new bass clef note, G.

3- Keep working on Old Grey Goose from last week!

4- Don’t forget to improvise every day, and use our new Bass note!

Lesson 67:

In today’s class, we spent some time reviewing sharps. These symbols are found in music, before the notes and they tell us to play the black note to the immediate right of the white note! Good work everyone!

After this review, we talked about how sharps will apply to the note until the end of the bar. This means, if the first F in a bar is sharp, and then you play an E and go back to an F, it will still be sharp. But once there is a  bar line, don’t forget that the sharps no longer apply!

Heading into the Games Room, you took some time to play the note finding game, that now has sharps in it! Great work everyone! You are finding your notes faster and faster.

To finish off the class, you spent some time experimenting with sharps in the Improvisation Room. See you!

Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:

1- Complete this other activity sheet on sharps!

2- Print out a copy of Old Grey Goose to work on at home!

3- Try your hand at Row Your Boat as well!
