Inglis Street Elementary, Grades P-2, Wednesdays from 12.00-1.00 (Mar 10)

Hello Everybody!

We began this week with a fun rhythm session. Instead of just using our hands to make rhythm patterns, we used different parts of our bodies. We tapped our shoulders, our heads, our laps and even made our noses beep! Eventually, we even began to do the ‘hand jive!’ (Pancakes, potatoes and curly fries!)

Level 1A, Lesson 13 – Julia and Julian

           Lesson 14 – Madeline

  • In Lesson 13 & 14 you met up with Mr Joplin once again. He began by reminding you about finger numbers. Remember, for both hands your thumb is finger 1, pointer finger is number 2, middle finger is number 3, ring finger is number 4, and the little pinkie is number 5.
  • Then he helped Madeline to remember the Musical Alphabet too! (A B C D E F and G)
  • You began to play through some songs by reading circle notes moving in a stepping motion. You read the notes and played them with your first, second and third fingers of each hand. Great job!
  • To finish off the lesson, you had fun in the Games Room, and Improvisation Room!

Level 1B, Lesson 21 – Taha

  • In Lesson 22, we met up again with Mr Villa Lobos. This week he taught us about even more grown up notes.
  • We learnt about half notes and quarter notes today. A half note is a white, or empty looking note with a stem and you hold it down for 2 counts. A quarter note is a black, or filled in note with a stem which you only hold for 1 count.
  • You played through even more songs with Miss Melody which used these new grown up notes. Great work!
  • To finish off the lesson, you spent some time in the Games Room and Improvisation Room to relax after all that playing! Good job!

Level 2C, Lesson 57 (Review) and 58 – Nhi

  • Today in lesson 57, you practiced playing even more tunes written in 3/4 time. This means that each measure has 3 quarter beats. You have a very good sense of rhythm and so had no trouble with feeling 3 in a measure. Well done!
  • Then in lesson 58, Mr Chopin taught you all about ties. Sometimes, a composer may want to use a note that it so long, it has too many beats for one measure. To get over this problem, the composer will write smaller notes which add together to make the long sound he wants, and then tie those smaller notes together over the barline! When you see two notes tied together, you have to add their total number of beats, and then hold the note for that length of time.
  • You played some pieces of music written in 3/4 time which had lots of ties in them. Well done! You really understood these ideas well!
  • You visited the Games Room and Improvisation Room to finish off today’s lesson!
