Blanchard Memorial, CMJ Monday 3-4 PM, March 1, 2010

Sorry to be so late with this this week!  And I’ll be brief so it won’t take you so long to read! :)

Our major theory focus this week was on rhythmic note values: whole notes, half notes and quarter notes.  Some of the students in this class know these notes very well now, as well as dotted half notes (3 beats!) while others who are not yet in CMJ2 are calling them holding notes but still know how long, or how many beats (counts) they last.  Composers we focused on this week were Hector Villa Lobos (Brazil, “He has a funny accent!”) and Mozart (“Wow, so many composers come from Europe!”).

Congratulations to Rachel and Jillian who finished their lessons with Mr. Bach this week!

For practice at home this week:

1.  Arianna, Hwan, Philip, Haley, Delaney, Pratik, Caroline, Brandon go to lesson 21 in CMJ1 in “free” mode, and click through the lesson until you get to Ode to Joy (the last piece).  Put your right hand in C position (thumb is on middle C and each of the others fingers on their own adjacent notes D, E, F and G) and then play the piece while looking only at the screen!  If you think you have it memorized, play it with your eyes closed! If you have a metronome at home, or if you have Piano Suite Premier play it with a metronome!

2. Hwan, Arianna, Philip, Haley, Delaney, Pratik, Caroline, Brandon in CMJ2 go to the library and click on the computer and pick out a new piece that you might want to play for the recital at the end of this session.  Practice it if you wish, but we’ll do that in class as well.

3. Aeden, Andrew, Jillian and Rachel in CMJ1 please spend a lot of time this week in the Games Room!  Especially with Bongo Boy, and Cliff Hanger.

4.  Everyone go to the Improvisation Room and find a channel that is playing in groups of 4 beats (you may have to try a few channels, some have three) and then do some improvisations using quarter notes (one beat or count), half notes (two beats or counts) and whole notes (4 beats or counts).

5.  Here is the musical math sheet regarding whole, half and quarter notes that many or you did in class.  If you have already done it, then please make up a new problem for your classmates to solve on Monday.  Aeden, Andrew, Jillian and Rachel you may try this if you wish, but you have not done this in your lessons yet so if it seems tricky you can bring it to class on Monday and we’ll look at it together.

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend, and see you on Monday!
