Portland Estates, Grades 3-6, Fridays from 3.30-4.30 (Feb 5)

Hi Everyone!

Whole Group

We began yesterday by working as a group to review note values and rests. You all did very well with this and are becoming very confident at reading and clapping back rhythms. Well done!

Then we reminded ourselves of the common musical terms we have looked at over the past few weeks. As a group you did very well with these, but individually, you may need to brush up on one or two! Have a look at this worksheet to help review them at home.

Piano Suite Level 2 – Alec and Ali

  • We warmed up with C, G and F major, and our legato and staccato exercise.
  • Then, in Piano Player you continued to work on last week’s piece called ‘Here We Go, In a Row!’ Great job with getting both your hands to work independently of each other!
  • Then you began a new piece called “Daydream Believer.’ This is a long tune which will require some time learning hands apart before putting them together, but you began well with it in class. :)
  • Together, we looked at time signatures and key signatures. We also discussed sharps and flats too.
  • To finish off the lesson, you had fun playing games in Children’s Music Journey.

Home Assignments

Piano Suite Level 3 – Carson

  • We began by warming up with C, G and F Major, and your chromatic scales. We also spent time on the legato and staccato, and slur exercises.
  • In Piano Player you continued to work on the piece we began last week called ‘Ten Little Indians.’ Great job with this, Carson!
  • Then I showed you a new piece called ‘Largo’ from Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony.’ You began working through this with hands apart, which is a very sensible approach to learning a new piece.
  • Then to finish off you logged into Children’s Music Journey Volune 3 for some fun in the Games Room!

Home Assignments for PS3

  • Here is the scale sheet for this level. This week, continue to work on the new minor scales.
  • Continue to work on the slur exercise .
  • If you haven’t done this yet, print out and try this activity sheet all about notes on ledger lines.

Piano Suite Level 4 and above – Craig, Arman and Mehran

  • We began today by reviewing our C, F and G Major broken and solid triads. Some of you are really getting a feel for the finger pattern needed to play these triads smoothly from root chord, to first inversion and then second inversion. If you know you haven’t really been working on these at home this week, try to make time to practice them this week!
  • In Piano Player you spent some time working on ‘Alouette’ and our new piece, ‘The Merry Farmer.’ I know that this tune is tricky, but keep working at it! 5 minutes a day on the left hand and you’ll see a huge improvement.
  • To finish off, you logged into Children’s Music Journey to play in the Games Room.

Home Assignments for PS4

  • Print out the technique sheet for Level 4. This week, practice the solid and broken triads for F and G Major.
  • Read through this sheet about the C Blues scale. We’ll talk about it some more next week.

Bye for now! See you next week!
