Saint Mary’s, Grades P-2, Fridays from 11:45-12:45 (Jan 29)

Lessons 15 & 16:

What a busy lesson we had today! We met with Mr. Joplin again, to learn more about the musical alphabet as well as musical steps. Everyone did such a great job with this lesson that we skipped the practice room and went right on to meet our new teacher, Miss Mendelssohn.

Miss Mendelssohn grew up in a time where girls didn’t usually become popular composers or piano players. But her parents encouraged her and her brother Felix to both become very talented musicians, who were able to play several different instruments!

Miss Mendelssohn taught us about stepping songs… Stepping songs are pieces of music where the notes usually move in a step motion. Everyone did a great job, and after a short practice session with Miss Melody, everyone was playing songs very well! We even got to go to the library and practice a few more of these songs before the class was over!

I am very proud of you all! Have a great week and see you next time!

Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:

1- Print out and complete your weekly worksheet.

2- Practice playing notes in a step-motion, and then try skipping notes here and there.

3- Keep practising playing towards Middle C. First tell yourself how many notes you want to play and then make sure to leave enough room to play them all!

4- Use different rhythms while playing. Long, Short, Short or Short, Long, Short. Try coming up with your own!

Lesson 52:

We learnt another new note today! This time, Mr. Handel showed us how to go low and play an F with our left hand! To play this note, with your left hand thumb on Middle C, you have to use your 5th finger!

After a good practice session with Miss Melody, we took some time to review skips and steps on the white board, and we also talked about how music can paint a picture for us, with the different notes, or instruments that are used.

To finish off the class, we spent some time in the Improvisation Room, experimenting with our new left hand note while playing with both of our thumbs on Middle C. Let’s not forget that we also played some games! Good work everyone!

See you all next week!
