Portland Estates, Grades 3-6, Fridays from 3.30-4.30 (Jan 29)

Hi Everyone!

Another great lesson yesterday and we got a lot done! :)

Piano Suite Level 2 – Alec and Ali

  • We began by warming up our fingers with some scale and technique practice; we looked at C, G and F major, and how to play legato and staccato.
  • Then, in Piano Player you continued to work on ‘Let It Be’ and ‘Happy Birthday.’
  • Then you also tried a short tune where both your hands were playing at the same time, called ‘Here We Go, In a Row!” You did well with this one but it was a bit tricky to get both your hands doing different things at the same time!
  • We worked together to review how to write C Major scale. Remember, an octave has 8 notes, so check that you have this many when you write the scale down! Then, we learned how to write a Roman Numeral for each step of the scale. You did really well with this!
  • To finish off the lesson, you had fun playing games in Children’s Music Journey.

Piano Suite Level 3 – Carson

  • We began by warming up with lots of technique work. We reviewed C, G and F Major, and your chromatic scales. We also spent time on the legato and staccato, and slur exercises.
  • In Piano Player you did very well with ‘March Millitaire’ so you moved onto a new piece called ‘Ten Little Indians.’
  • Together, we looked at ledger lines on the whiteboard. Then you had a go at playing ‘The Baseball Game’ just for some practice at reading notes which fall outside of the usual lines and spaces of the Treble and Bass clefs.
  • Then to finish off you logged into Children’s Music Journey Volune 3 for some fun in the Games Room!

Piano Suite Level 4 and above – Craig, Arman and Mehran

  • We began today by reviewing our C, F and G Major scales, our C Chromatic scales, and our Broken and solid triads. These were much better this week, so we tried to use the same finger patterns to play the root, first and second inversions of the F and G major triads too!
  • In Piano Player you spent some time working on ‘Alouette’.
  • Then we began a new piece called ‘The Merry Farmer.’ This piece is going to take a while to master because the left hand has a lot of chords to play. Just take it slowly, and work with hands apart for a while before we put hands together.
  • Together, we worked a lot on rhythm and timing again today. We wrote some rhythms on the whiteboard using compound time signatures, like 6/8 and 3/8 which you had fun clapping out loud.
  • To finish off, you logged into Children’s Music Journey to play in the Games Room.

Bye for now! See you next week!
