Lessons 3 & 4:
To start off the class, we met up with Mr. Beethoven, who showed us all about short and long rhythms! You all did a fantastic job playing back the different rhythms using Middle C on the piano! However, rhythm is a very important part of the music you play, so we did spend some time practising with Miss Melody.
Because you are all learning so quickly, we went to see Mr. Beethoven for another lesson, where he showed us how to read circle notes instead of the picture notes we have been using so far. This is a very different way of reading notes, but everyone caught on very quickly, so after a bit more practising with Miss Melody, we all went to relax in the Games Room, and in the Improvisation Room! Fantastic work everyone, I will see you all next week for another fun filled lesson!
Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:
1- Spend time playing different short and long rhythms on Middle C. Try and see what kind of combinations you can come up with!
2- Don’t forget to keep finding Middle C every time you sit down at the piano! Even if you are not sitting down to play rhythms!
3- Try writing some different circle notes on a piece of paper and then play them on your piano!
4- Work on this activity sheet!
5- Don’t forget to keep improvising and to keep having FUN!
Lessons 15 & 16:
What a busy lesson we had today! We met with Mr. Joplin again, to learn more about the musical alphabet as well as musical steps. Everyone did such a great job with this lesson that we skipped the practice room and went right on to meet our new teacher, Miss Mendelssohn.
Miss Mendelssohn grew up in a time where girls didn’t usually become popular composers or piano players. But her parents encouraged her and her brother Felix to both become very talented musicians, who were able to play several different instruments!
Miss Mendelssohn taught us about stepping songs… Stepping songs are pieces of music where the notes usually move in a step motion. Everyone did a great job, and after a short practice session with Miss Melody, everyone was playing songs very well! We even got to go to the library and practice a few more of these songs before the class was over!
I am very proud of you all! Have a great week and see you next time!
Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:
1- Print out and complete your weekly worksheet.
2- Practice playing notes in a step-motion, and then try skipping notes here and there.
3- Keep practicing playing towards Middle C. First tell yourself how many notes you want to play and then make sure to leave enough room to play them all!
4- Use different rhythms while playing. Long, Short, Short or Short, Long, Short. Try coming up with your own!
Lesson 32:
Today Mr. Mozart started teaching us a new way to read notes. We are now reading grown up notes on something we call the Grand Staff! Instead of having 5 lines for our notes, we now have two groups of five lines. The top part is for the right hand, the bottom part is for the left hand, and in the middle, we have Middle C!
This is the way you will be reading notes while playing piano from now on. That’s right! You are now reading notes the same way that professional piano players do! Great work everyone!
After a bit of time practicing with Miss Melody, we went to the Games Room to spend the rest of the class relaxing. Good work everyone! See you all next Wednesday!
Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:
1- Spend time improvising every day!
2- Print out this page for a few songs to work on at home!
3- Don’t forget to keep counting and working on your rhythm!
4- Always remember to HAVE FUN!
Lesson 42:
Today, Mr. Tchaikovsky taught us our first dynamics. Dynamics are the level of “loudness” that we play piano with! We learnt two different dynamic terms, which were piano (which means soft) and forte (loud), which we then took some time to try and use while playing a few different pieces.
Miss Melody also helped us get used to playing while paying attention to dynamics. Great work everyone!
To finish off the class, we headed over to the Games Room for a bit of relaxation, and then we spent a bit of time in the Improvisation Room where you all tried to use different dynamics while playing. Great work everyone! See you all next week!
Home Assignments For The Week & Reminders:
1- Spend time improvising, making sure to use your left hand 5th finger. Don’t forget to use different dynamics while playing!
2- Use the link from last week to print out a copy of the Grand Staff and write down some melodies that you come up with!
3- Keep working on Row, Row, Row which was offered last week as well!
Lesson 52:
We learnt another new note today! This time, Mr. Handel showed us how to go low and play an F with our left hand! To play this note, with your left hand thumb on Middle C, you have to use your 5th finger!
After a good practice session with Miss Melody, we took some time to review skips and steps on the white board, and we also talked about how music can paint a picture for us, with the different notes, or instruments that are used.
To finish off the class, we spent some time in the Improvisation Room, experimenting with our new left hand note while playing with both of our thumbs on Middle C. Let’s not forget that we also played some games! Good work everyone!
See you all next week!
Home Assignments For The Week:
1- Print out and complete this worksheet!
2- Improvise using your new note, F, in the left hand.

Both of my sons are in the musiq club. They are enjoying it. Please add me to the weekly email updates as I’m not sure which lesson my son, Matthew, in grade 2 is working on.
Thankyou.
