Portland Estates Elementary, Wed. Feb 18th, 3:30-4:30pm

Hi Everyone!

We had a great class on wednesday!

CMJ 1A – We began our class today with Lesson 12 – “Left hand ant tunnels”, with Mr. Joplin.  Miss Melody helped us in the practice room, and we played all the games available in the games room.  Those who were done early spent some time in the library trying some Folk Tunes For the Right hand.  We spent some time practicing our finger numbers on our knees, doing some playbacks.  We also did some C Position playbacks on the keyboard, where 3 finger numbers were called out in a row, and students repeated them on the keyboard.  Students can practice this at home with parents.  We spent some time working on our ensemble piece “Ode To Joy” and students received a copy that they can work on at home.  We spent some time in the improvisation room, and finished the class by playing some musical games.

CMJ 1B – We started our class with Lesson 19 – “Grown-up Notes” with Miss Mendelssohn.  Miss Melody helped us practice and we played the games available in the games room.  Those who were finished early spent some time in the library practicing some Folk Tunes for the Left Hand.  We reviewed what we had learned about Miss Mendelssohn and spent some time talking about Etudes.  We did some C Position playbacks with the left hand, and worked on our ensemble piece.  Students can do playbacks at home with parents and can practice “Ode To Joy” at home as well.  We spent some time reviewing our line notes and our space notes, and then made up our own music in the improvisation room.  We finished the class by playing some musical games.

CMJ 2A – We began our class with Lesson 35 – “The Bass Clef: C, B, A” with Mr. Mozart.  Miss Melody helped us in the practice room, and we played games 2, 3, 5 and 6.  We spent some time reviewing the grand staff and all the parts that make it up.  We spent some time doing some C Position playbacks and students can practice these at home with parents.  We also spent some time working on our ensemble piece “Row, Row, Row your boat”.  Students received a copy of this and can practice this piece at home.  We spent some time in the improvisation room, and finished the class by playing some musical games.

CMJ 2C – We began our class with Lesson 54 – “Eighth notes” with Mr. Handel.  Instead of doing Miss Melody’s practice room today, we did another lesson, Lesson 55 – “More song with Eighth notes”.  We played games 5, 8, 9 and 10.  We spent some time reviewing our note values that we have learned so far, such as whole notes, half notes, quarter ntoes, and eighth notes.  We spent some time creating 4/4 rhythms with atleast one eighth note in them.  Students can practice creating these rhythms at home.  We spent some time doing some C Position playbacks with the left hand, where 3 or 4 finger numbers were called out, and students repeated the sequence on the keyboards.  Students can practice this at home with parents.  We practiced our new ensemble piece “Old Grey Goose”, and students can practice this at home.  This is the right hand part.  There is a left hand part that we will learn in the next few weeks.  Click here to print this piece.  When practicing, remember to keep a steady beat!  We spent some time in the improvisation room, and finished the class with some musical games.

CMJ 3A – We began our class with Lesson 69 – “Flats” with Mr. Scarlatti.  Instead of doing a practice room with Miss Melody, we went right ahead and did Lesson 70 – “Flats Review” again with Mr. Scarlatti.  We then spent some time in the games room, playing the games available.  We spent some time reviewing what we had learned about the life and music of Mr. Scarlatti as this was our last lesson with him, and we also reviewed our sharps and flats.  We spent some time doing some C Position playbacks for the right and left hand, and students can practice this at home with parents.  We also started the right hand of our new ensemble piece “Old Grey Goose”.  Students can practice this at home, as there will be a left hand part coming soon.  Click here to print the song.  We spent some time in the improvisation room, and finished the class by playing some musical games.

Great work everyone!
